On-premises is old-fashioned? Not at all! How to cleverly combine digital sovereignty with economy

According to surveys conducted by the bitkom association, more than 50% of companies prefer to have as much control as possible over the servers on which the data for their business-critical processes is processed. To this end, they regularly set up and operate their own servers on their own premises “on-premises.”

However, in order to comply with information security standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 27001), physical access controls such as steel doors and key management must be implemented and maintained. This involves considerable effort.

The unique cryptographic perimeter seal of the BetterEdge modules prevents unnoticed physical access to the servers. The server modules can be installed anywhere without any special construction work and without the need for strict adherence to processes. This means that BetterEdge 3000 already saves you money in the server environment.

Another economic disadvantage of conventional on-premises servers is that they are only used by the company itself or even just by one department within the company. As a result, only a single-digit percentage of the servers' computing power is typically utilized.

Confidential Computing provides particularly secure isolation between different workloads. This allows multiple departments or even external users to share your resources. In return, you receive a royalty payment of €1 per kWh. You can flexibly determine what percentage of your resources (0-100%) you want to make available for use by third parties in return for a fee.

How you can digitize in a verifiably sovereign way

  • Confidential computing increases security against attackers via the operating system (both external and internal).

  • Application users can check at any time whether the correct software is running on hardware that is considered secure.

  • The cryptographic perimeter seal increases physical security beyond the level of even the best data centres.

  • Secure keys for encrypted backups increase security against data loss.
  • Your ownership of a BetterEdge module in conjunction with the secure key source BetterKey, which will also be available as open source (from November 2025), makes you cryptographically resilient. This means you are also completely independent of BetterEdge for restoring all data.

How to avoid costs

    • With ‘Own & Share’, you can profitably utilise your currently unused resources by receiving 1€ per kWh consumed by third-party applications.

    • This opportunity to refine locally available electricity allows you to recoup the cost of your PV, biogas or wind power system much more quickly.

    • With BetterEdge automatically managing your module, you don't need to plan for costly infrastructure maintenance.

    • As you own the portion of resources that you do not use profitably for third parties, you can use as many TEDs, RAM and storage devices as you like, in line with the available resources, at no additional cost.

    • The protection provided by the cryptographic perimeter seal means you do not need to implement costly access control measures.

    • By avoiding the costs you would incur in building a small quasi-data centre, you also free yourself from the economic pressure of having to upgrade this limited space with new, space-saving hardware after a short period of time (3-4 years).

Your Benetits

With BetterEdge 3000, you can achieve digital sovereignty and verify it with cryptographic strength. The digital sovereignty that can be achieved significantly exceeds the digital sovereignty that can be offered from data centres, as cryptographic resilience can also be achieved through ownership of the BetterEdge modules in conjunction with the open-source BetterKey key source (from November 2025).

With BetterEdge 3000, you can achieve significant cost savings compared to traditional on-premises computing and offerings from central cloud data centres. The ‘Own & Share’ principle gives you flexibility in terms of scaling and economical use of resources.

Since the geographical distribution of computing resources with BetterEdge rewards the use of locally generated electricity, less electricity needs to flow through public grids and the share of renewable electricity can be increased. In addition, the cryptographic perimeter seal indirectly enables an extension of the service life, which contributes significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In many cases, the warm exhaust air can also be put to good use, e.g. to keep rooms dry.

BetterEdge 3000 combines the advantages of traditional on-premises installations with the benefits of cloud offerings. The respective disadvantages are largely eliminated.

When considering what computing should ideally look like in the future, the best scenario is a so-called ‘edge-cloud continuum’ in which centrally and decentrally operated resources are intelligently networked with each other. BetterEdge makes an essential contribution to this at the edge.
